G6 Statement on the Future European Strategy for AI in Science

In July 2025, the G6, an alliance of six leading European research organizations, released a joint position paper with concrete recommendations for shaping a European Strategy on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Science.

The G6, an alliance of six leading European research organizations - the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, the Leibniz Association, and the Max Planck Society – released a joint position paper with concrete recommendations for shaping a European strategy on AI in science.

The paper highlights the key role of AI in advancing research across fields such as health, climate, physics, and materials science. It calls for a significant increase in funding for fundamental AI research, the establishment of shared computational and data infrastructures, and new mobility and training programs to strengthen expertise across Europe. The G6 also emphasises the importance of interdisciplinary innovation platforms, robust ethical frameworks, and EU-wide standards to ensure the responsible and sustainable development of AI.

Helmholtz AI’s Scientific Director, Fabian Theis, is one of the six signatories of the statement. His participation reflects Helmholtz’s strong commitment to building Europe’s capacity in both foundational and applied AI, while ensuring that innovation is driven by openness, trustworthiness, and European values.

“The integration of AI into scientific research is key for Europe’s competitiveness and sovereignty,” the statement notes, stressing that investments in home-grown AI solutions will reduce dependencies on third countries and strengthen Europe’s position as a global leader in cutting-edge, responsible research.
